Sunshine is a lab. She loves to hunt. She loves to catch things that move. It really doesn't matter what. Of course with the weather near 100 degrees and the heat index even higher, she's abandoned much of that. Except when something just happens to cross her path. She really can't help herself.
I knew something was up when she scrambled out from under the van (which she is really too big to be under) and raced across the yard. I hadn't seen her move that quickly in weeks. She's so laid-back that her usual mode of travel is slow and leisurely.
She immediately started looking for something. Her nose was in high gear. I didn't know what she saw. I figured maybe a squirrel. She likes to go after squirrels. I know the squirrels get a good laugh as they jump from tree to tree without the dogs ever having a clue.
Sunshine started trying to move some tin stacked next to the cattle trailer. Soon, Little Guy and Miss Lady Bug had joined the search. I tried to be helpful. I even moved a few things. No critter found. They went on first one side of the fence and then the other. I followed Sunshine's gaze and looked in a pecan tree. Nothing.
My shirt was starting to stick to my back so I figured I'd let them continue the search alone. As I started away I happened to glance back at the tree right next to the one Sunshine had searched. A small back cat was wedged in the v where the tree split into two huge limbs. Her white paws clung to her perch. She met my gaze. We both knew she was a goner if the dogs ever got to her.
Don't get me wrong. They're good dogs and usually quite friendly. They know about calves and mama cows. They understand that geese and wild ducks are to be welcomed. They don't know about cats. We don't have cats. I figure they believe a cat is sort of like a racoon or opossum or an armadillo. I really, really dislike armadillos. They dig holes everywhere.
But this was a cat and I felt sorry for it. I have no idea where it belongs but I recognized it as one who sometimes strolls across the pastures. I know it belongs to someone because it appears to be well-fed. Everyone makes dumb mistakes sometimes. I figured going into an area with three dogs is pretty dumb. And after all this time of hanging around, she had to know about the three dogs.
So I called the dogs and made them go into the backyard. They were not pleased but they obeyed. After they were secured, I went back to check on the cat. Sure enough, the cat was long gone. Maybe she wasn't as dumb as I'd thought.
