Little Guy loves to go to the garden with his grandaddy. He loves to go just about anywhere with his grandaddy. It's lots of fun. He can hunt and chase baby calves and slosh through the edge of the pond. Just guy stuff.
But Little Guy is really, really afraid of the electric fence. The fence is supposed to keep the cows and calves from the vegetables in the garden. It also keeps Little Guy in the garden.
He was really afraid when Grandaddy put a gate up at the garden entrace. What if it had an invisible electric fence? He couldn't be sure. He was so excited to go into the garden that he didn't think about that. But when it was time to leave, he was scared. Gran tried to coax him out. He just shook his little head. Grandaddy called and called. Little Guy frowned and backed up. Then Mama came out. She walked through the gate, bent down and hugged him close to her. "It's okay, Little Guy," she said. "We'll walk through the gate together. There's no electric fence at the gate."
So Little Guy walked beside his Mama, her hand gently guiding him, and they walked through the garden gate. There wasn't an electric fence there after all! He was so excited.
Little Guy became a regular fixture in the garden. He helped Grandaddy cut the okra. He fertilized plants and watered the tomatoes. And he hunted. He just knew that somewhere he'd find something exciting. When Grandaddy got ready to leave, he would call Little Guy and out the gate they'd both go.
Until one morning Grandaddy forgot about Little Guy. He left the garden, closed the gate and when to the house to watch his game show on television. Little Guy was so scared when he realized he was alone in the garden, surrounded by that bad electric fence. He tried to open the gate but it was chained shut. He sat down to wait but Grandaddy didn't come back.
Little Guy got hotter and hotter. He didn't want to be in the garden anymore. He wanted his Mama but his Mama didn't know he was in the garden. So he started digging. He dug and he dug and he dug. He figured if he could just dig deep enough. he could scoot under the gate and go home. Little Guy wanted to go to the house. Little Guy really, really wanted his Mama.
Finally, Grandaddy came back to the garden. He was really sorry he'd forgotten about Little Guy. But Little Guy ran past him. He ran out the gate and down to the house. His Mama caught him in her arms. He cooled in front of the fan. Then he went inside and got a special treat from Gran.
Grandaddy got his tools out and raised the gate up so that Little Guy could go into the garden anytime he wanted. And Little Guy could get out anytime he wanted too. Little Guy didn't help Grandaddy with the gate. He stayed close to Mama. He didn't want to go to the garden anymore.
