Little Guy loves to help. He trots happily beside his Granddaddy when they head to the garden or check fences. He sniffs weeds and brush for critters. He exercises baby calves. He is a very busy boy.
The other day was no exception. Granddaddy planted watermelons on the bank by the house. Mama loves watermelons. Little Guy thinks they taste yucky. He much prefers cookies.
The only problem with the watermelons is that they are really, really small. Mama cut five watermelons at one time. She and Gran and Granddaddy ate and ate. They didn't share with Little Guy, Sunshine and Miss Lady Bug because they don't like watermelon. Afterwards, Mama scooped the leftover watermelon from the rind and placed it into the refrigerator so they could eat it another day.
She put the small watermelon rinds into a bucket and headed out to give them to the cows. The cows love watermelon almost as much as Mama. Little Guy rushed to help. He scooted through the gate and pranced happily toward the cows with Mama and the bucket of watermelon rinds.
The cows came rushing over. The cows are really, really big. Little Guy likes to pretend that he's as large as his sisters. He likes everyone to think he can make those cows do just what he says, just like Miss Lady Bug does. But those cows were going after that watermelon and they just didn't care what Little Guy said. Or what he wanted to pretend. He felt really, really small.
Mama handed out watermelon slices to some of the nice cows. Sugar isn't nice. She thought Little Guy might want some watermelon. She has big horns and she started toward him. Little Guy moved quickly out of the way. She eyed his new position. Little Guy wasn't sure she could reach him. Besides, Mama wouldn't let one of those cows hurt him. If she saw them try anyway.
Little Guy decided not to take any chances. As Sugar advanced, he retreated. He rushed back through the gate and went to stand by Miss Lady Bug. The cows always listened to her. Miss Lady Bug just sat there and watched as Mama navigated through the cows. Miss Lady Bug didn't go out with them too much anymore but she was always willing to help should Mama need her. A few of the cows got a little rowdy but Mama always carries a stick when she's around the cows.
Pretty soon Mama headed back through the gate. Whew! Helping was really hard work. And sometimes it could be a little scary too!
