Baby Proofing a Christmas House

Mama has been busy baby proofing the house. Little Guy helps in every way he can. He follows Mama around and asks question after question.

Mama isn't putting out anything breakable this year. At least not anything low enough for little fingers to reach.

"But Mama I won't break the reindeer. I promise," Little Guy says.

"I know, Little Guy," she assures him. "But Matthew is little and he crawls everywhere. I wouldn't want him to get hurt. It's best to only use things that can't break."

"Oh, I see. " Little Guy thought a minute. "He wouldn't eat my treats, will he?"

Mama laughed. "We'll make sure to keep your treats well away from him. I know you really don't like to share."

Little Guy was relieved. He really doesn't like to share.

Mama moved a plant up to a higher shelf.

"Why don't you leave it down low, Mama," Little Guy asked. "It isn't breakable."

"No, but some plants are not made to be eaten. Not by human babies or puppy babies."

"Not even me, Mama," Little Guy asked.

"Especially not you." She looked at him sternly. "If you eat a Lily leaf or holly berries, you could get really, really sick."

"I didn't know that," Little Guy exclaimed. "I thought all plants were safe to eat."

Mama shook her head. "Not so. Did you know that some foods can make you sick too?"

Little Guy shook his head.

"Chocolate can make you sick and even kill you. That's why I never, ever let you or Sunshine eat chocolate."

"Because I could die," Little Guy asked.

Mama nodded. "Some foods are okay for you to eat. Mashed potatoes or a bit of pumpkin pie. But don't eat a lot of fatty foods and watch out for that turkey bone! We don't want a Christmas visit to the vet."

"I don't like to go to the doctor," Little Guy assured her.

"It's always best to be safe. Ribbon, which cats love, can cause an obstruction that leads to surgery. Christmas trees can topple over when you try to climb them."

"Not me, Mama," Little Guy assured her. "Sunshine likes to climb but I'd rather stay on the ground."

Mama smiled. "That's the safest place to be."

"Okay, let's blow out the candle and go to the other room."

"But it's so pretty and it smells good. Let's let it burn a little while longer," Little Guy pleaded.

Mama shook her head firmly. "No. All candles must be out when no one is in the room. Also, you mustn't ever, ever play around a lit candle."

"Because Sunshine's tail could knock it over," Little Guy asked.

"That's right. We wouldn't want to accidently cause a fire."

"No," Little Guy agreed.

"Thanks for all your help, Little Guy. I think we've about got the house ready for Christmas and all it's babies. Let's go get a special treat to celebrate."

Little Guy was out the door before she finished the sentence. He loves treats!

A Good Day Turns Bad

Little Guy thought he was having a pretty good day. He and Sunshine spent the morning helping Grandaddy spray the fence rows for weeds. They'd even counted the cows. Gran had fixed spaghetti for lunch. Little Guy really likes spaghetti. After lunch, he'd stretched out on the cool tile floor for his afternoon nap. Then Mama had an idea. It was not a good idea. Mama decided that Little Guy and Sunshine needed baths. And it wasn't even Saturday! Little Guy didn't realize what Mama had planned until it was too late. Sunshine had her bath first. Since Little Guy was inside having a nap, he didn't know anything about it. He should have suspected something when Mama opened the back door, called his name and insisted he come outside. Sunshine met him at the door to tell him what was about to happen. Little Guy scurried toward the shop but Mama caught him. She picked him up and carried him to the wash area. Little Guy started shaking before Mama even turned the ...

art for a cause

This cabinet was my contribution to the Funky Furniture Auction held at Landmark Park recently. The event was to raise money for a scholarship fun. The original cabinet was stained a dark brown. It came with hearts cut into the doors and chicken wire behind them. It didn't have a back. I was told it had been chicken wire. It was definitely country -- which I'm not. I took the old doors off and put new doors on. It cut some har, a couple of eyes, put on nose knobs and some bright lips and Miz Bea was almost ready. I added her shoes and hat and she was set. This piece of functional art is whimsical and unique. And it was all for a good cause.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. – Revelation 21:4 He was smart and stubborn. He was my protector and rarely left my side. He loved licking bowls and eating treats of any kind. He was bribable in the best way. He loved walks in the pasture and aggravating his sister. His body failed him in the end. His hind legs were barely functioning. His back pain sometimes caused him to cry out. His eyesight was almost gone. But he was still so happy. I helped him stand when his body refused to lift his backside up. He rested against me until he could gain his balance. I covered him with my body when he started to slip down the stairs. We made countless trips to the veterinarian but there was no magic pill. He was only 14. He was about a year old when he came home from the kill shelter. He’d come into the shelter as a stray. Thirteen and a half years wasn’t nearly long en...
