Little Guy spotted a new friend ambling across the pasture. Or, at least, he thought it might be a new friend. He hesitated. It also might be a varmint but he wasn't sure. Little Guy glanced around but he didn't see Sunshine. She was really good at weeding out who was a friend and who was a varmint.
Little Guy decided that he was a big boy and he could check it out on his own. He started across the pasture. He placed a big smile on his face. It was easier to make friends when you smiled. He got close enough he could see the animal's smooth black coat. Wow! That white stripe sure was pretty.
Just when Little Guy was about to introduce himself, Grandaddy bellowed out his name. Sometimes Little Guy can tell Grandaddy doesn't need him right that moment. This was not one of those times. He looked longingly at the animal.
"Little Guy," Grandaddy yelled again. "Get away from that skunk!"
Grandaddy sounded pretty excited so Little Guy figured he'd better hurry back and find out exactly what a skunk was.
"I was just trying to make a new friend," Little Guy explained as he hurried up to Grandaddy.
"Never, ever go near a skunk," Grandaddy said.
"Why not," Little Guy asked. "Besides, I don't know what a skunk is. It looked really pretty with that white stripe and all."
"A skunk is something that stinks so bad nobody will want to be around you," Grandaddy explained.
"But I didn't smell anything, Grandaddy. I swear. That skunk didn't stink at all," Little Guy said.
"You weren't close enough yet," Grandaddy said. "Another foot or two and that skunk would have sprayed you with his scent. That stinks really bad."
"And Mama would have to give me a bath." Little Guy looked down at the ground. He didn't like to take a bath.
"A bath won't remove the stink," Grandaddy said.
"It won't?" That didn't sound good at all.
"No. I met up with a skunk once. Nobody would get near me for a couple of days."
"Not even your Mama?"
Grandaddy shook his head.
Little Guy didn't think he could handle a couple of days away from his Mama. Little Guy loves his Mama. He was going to go find her and make her promise to never, ever not want to be around him because he smelled bad. And he wasn't going to try and make friends with a skunk anymore!
