Little Guy and Sunshine Unplant the Garden

Little Guy slicked his ears back, dropped his chin and headed toward the house. Sunshine, apparently forgetting about her sore leg, raced past him. Grandaddy was very upset and his anger was directed straight at Little Guy and Sunshine.

Little Guy brushed a tear from his eye as he waited for Mama to open the back door. It wasn't his fault. And it wasn't Sunshine's fault either! Grandaddy should have explained it better.

Grandaddy was planting the garden. Mama was getting ready for an art show and she didn't have time to help. Gran was busy too. So Little Guy and Sunshine volunteered to help.

One planter stopped up and Grandaddy had to plant one row with a hoe. He was not happy. Little Guy and Sunshine heard him talk about digging something up. They thought he meant the row that didn't plant right. That wasn't what he meant.

Little Guy and Sunshine were having so much fun. They had decided working in the garden was something they wanted to do on a regular basis. They ran around and played with each other. They laughed and laughed as they dug up that row.

Then Grandaddy saw them. He didn't laugh at all. In fact, he yelled at them. Little Guy doesn't like anyone to yell at him. It hurts his feelings and makes him cry. So he and Sunshine headed to the house.

When Mama opened the door, Little Guy launched himself into her arms. Sunshine rushed in and grabbed onto Mama's leg. Grandaddy was still bellowing when he showed up a few minutes later.

And do you know what Mama did? She laughed. Little Guy, Sunshine and Grandaddy all stared at her. Little Guy was fairly certain she'd finally lost her mind, just like she'd been threatening to do.

She fixed her gaze on Grandaddy first. "You know Little Guy and Sunshine have never worked in the garden before. You need to be specific and patient with them. And you need to closely supervise them until they understand exactly what you want them to do.

Then she turned to Little Guy and Sunshine. "You two need to listen with both ears and ask questions if you don't understand. Make sure you know exactly what Grandaddy wants you to do before you start anything."

She fixed all three of them a snack. Food always makes everyone feel better.

"Now I know Grandaddy appreciates all of Little Guy and Sunshine's help. And I know Little Guy and Sunshine love helping Grandaddy. So ya'll work together and have fun while you finish planting the garden." Then she smiled, turned around and left them all to sort it out by themselves.

A Good Day Turns Bad

Little Guy thought he was having a pretty good day. He and Sunshine spent the morning helping Grandaddy spray the fence rows for weeds. They'd even counted the cows. Gran had fixed spaghetti for lunch. Little Guy really likes spaghetti. After lunch, he'd stretched out on the cool tile floor for his afternoon nap. Then Mama had an idea. It was not a good idea. Mama decided that Little Guy and Sunshine needed baths. And it wasn't even Saturday! Little Guy didn't realize what Mama had planned until it was too late. Sunshine had her bath first. Since Little Guy was inside having a nap, he didn't know anything about it. He should have suspected something when Mama opened the back door, called his name and insisted he come outside. Sunshine met him at the door to tell him what was about to happen. Little Guy scurried toward the shop but Mama caught him. She picked him up and carried him to the wash area. Little Guy started shaking before Mama even turned the ...

art for a cause

This cabinet was my contribution to the Funky Furniture Auction held at Landmark Park recently. The event was to raise money for a scholarship fun. The original cabinet was stained a dark brown. It came with hearts cut into the doors and chicken wire behind them. It didn't have a back. I was told it had been chicken wire. It was definitely country -- which I'm not. I took the old doors off and put new doors on. It cut some har, a couple of eyes, put on nose knobs and some bright lips and Miz Bea was almost ready. I added her shoes and hat and she was set. This piece of functional art is whimsical and unique. And it was all for a good cause.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. – Revelation 21:4 He was smart and stubborn. He was my protector and rarely left my side. He loved licking bowls and eating treats of any kind. He was bribable in the best way. He loved walks in the pasture and aggravating his sister. His body failed him in the end. His hind legs were barely functioning. His back pain sometimes caused him to cry out. His eyesight was almost gone. But he was still so happy. I helped him stand when his body refused to lift his backside up. He rested against me until he could gain his balance. I covered him with my body when he started to slip down the stairs. We made countless trips to the veterinarian but there was no magic pill. He was only 14. He was about a year old when he came home from the kill shelter. He’d come into the shelter as a stray.
