It Was A Very Exciting Day!

It was a wonderful day. Little Guy and Sunshine helped Grandaddy with his new tiller. They chased a squirrel up a tree. They took naps. Gran cooked a big lunch so they ate really well.

The sky was starting to dim when Little Guy and Sunshine ate supper. Little Guy was still cleaning his bowl when Sunshine spotted something at the end of the garage. Mama came out about then to get their pans for washing. She went to see what Sunshine had found. Then she screamed.

Little Guy jumped. He didn't know whether to go get whatever had upset Mama or run for cover. He didn't get a chance to decide. Mama practically shoved Little Guy and Sunshine in the backdoor. She yelled for Gran to come help, then slammed the door.

Gran came running. Mama was trying to find a hoe. Someone had moved the hoe from beside the backdoor. That same someone had taken the shop key and was out with the cows. Mama put Gran in charge of watching the, gulp, snake, and she went running out through the laundry room and around to the front of the garage. There was the hoe.

Mama grabbed it and looked at the snake. It wasn't a large snake but it was a snake. One with a pointed head and diamonds on its back. Gran was itching to kill it herself but she didn't have a hoe. Mama was really wanted to hide but she was worried that it might have bitten Sunshine. It had to die.

Mama slammed the hoe into the snake. It curled up but it's mouth kept moving. She hit it again and again and again. Gran told her it was dead. Mama didn't believe Gran. She kept hitting it with the hoe. Finally, Gran took the shovel and squashed the snake's head. It didn't open its mouth anymore.

Mama rushed back inside to check Sunshine. There were no marks on her face or mouth. Sunshine said she was fine. Little Guy knows all about snake bites. They are bad, bad things. He doesn't want to get bit by a snake ever again.

Mama left Gran with the dead snake and went running to find Grandaddy. Mama was doing a lot of running. She finally got his attention. Grandaddy doesn't tend to hurry when he's called. Little Guy figured that the sight of Mama jumping up and down and waving frantically convinced him that something was wrong. He made it back to the house fairly quickly.

He wasn't sure what kind of snake it was. He put it on top of the garbage can where Little Guy and Sunshine couldn't get it. That way if Sunshine got sick, they could take it to the doctor. Sunshine doesn't want to go back to the doctor.

Little Guy, Sunshine and Mama went back to the pasture to help Grandaddy with the calves. Nine calves and the little mama cow were in the pecan tree area. All the other cows were in another pasture. Grandaddy was going to let the electric fence down so they could go straight to their mamas rather than go out the gate and have to walk all the way around through another pasture.

Little Guy and Sunshine didn't have time to help. They spotted a cat and gave chase. That really upset all the calves. The cat went up a pecan tree. Sunshine tried frantically to climb the tree. Little Guy barked encouragement. The little mama cow and the calves decided the gate was the best option and away they went. The other mama cows got upset with all the commotion and they came running around to make sure their babies were okay. Grandaddy just shook his head and put the fence back up.

Mama looked up at the cat but wouldn't help Sunshine and Little Guy get it. In fact, she said they couldn't have it. Mama made them go back to the house with her. They were disappointed but Mama gave them a chew stick. That made them feel better. Little Guy and Sunshine decided they'd had a very exciting day.

A Good Day Turns Bad

Little Guy thought he was having a pretty good day. He and Sunshine spent the morning helping Grandaddy spray the fence rows for weeds. They'd even counted the cows. Gran had fixed spaghetti for lunch. Little Guy really likes spaghetti. After lunch, he'd stretched out on the cool tile floor for his afternoon nap. Then Mama had an idea. It was not a good idea. Mama decided that Little Guy and Sunshine needed baths. And it wasn't even Saturday! Little Guy didn't realize what Mama had planned until it was too late. Sunshine had her bath first. Since Little Guy was inside having a nap, he didn't know anything about it. He should have suspected something when Mama opened the back door, called his name and insisted he come outside. Sunshine met him at the door to tell him what was about to happen. Little Guy scurried toward the shop but Mama caught him. She picked him up and carried him to the wash area. Little Guy started shaking before Mama even turned the ...

art for a cause

This cabinet was my contribution to the Funky Furniture Auction held at Landmark Park recently. The event was to raise money for a scholarship fun. The original cabinet was stained a dark brown. It came with hearts cut into the doors and chicken wire behind them. It didn't have a back. I was told it had been chicken wire. It was definitely country -- which I'm not. I took the old doors off and put new doors on. It cut some har, a couple of eyes, put on nose knobs and some bright lips and Miz Bea was almost ready. I added her shoes and hat and she was set. This piece of functional art is whimsical and unique. And it was all for a good cause.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. – Revelation 21:4 He was smart and stubborn. He was my protector and rarely left my side. He loved licking bowls and eating treats of any kind. He was bribable in the best way. He loved walks in the pasture and aggravating his sister. His body failed him in the end. His hind legs were barely functioning. His back pain sometimes caused him to cry out. His eyesight was almost gone. But he was still so happy. I helped him stand when his body refused to lift his backside up. He rested against me until he could gain his balance. I covered him with my body when he started to slip down the stairs. We made countless trips to the veterinarian but there was no magic pill. He was only 14. He was about a year old when he came home from the kill shelter. He’d come into the shelter as a stray. Thirteen and a half years wasn’t nearly long en...
