Little Guy Goes to the Yard Sales

Little Guy was so excited! Mama and Gran were going to visit some yard sales and he was invited to go. Little Guy had never been to a yard sale before. Mama had a yard sale once but Little Guy didn't get to go. It was at the road and Little Guy and Sunshine aren't allowed anywhere near the road.

Little Guy jumped out of bed the minute he heard Mama up. He rushed outside to do his business, then waited patiently for Grandaddy to fix his breakfast. Grandaddy couldn't cook but he was really good at pouring cereal and Moist 'n Meaty.

Mama and Little Guy were ready to go. The yard sales started at 7 a.m. and it was about that time. Gran wasn't ready to go. Mama wasn't pleased. She poured herself another cup of coffee. That made Mama feel better.

Soon, Mama, Gran and Little Guy piled into the van and away they went. The first stop was a community-wide yard sale. They didn't buy a thing! Mama said it was all over-priced.

The next stop was a church fundraiser. They didn't have any furniture. Mama likes to buy used furniture, then paint it bright colors and sell it. But Mama and Gran found some smaller items to buy. Little Guy didn't see any toys or dog bones. He was really disappointed.

Next, they started hitting the individual sales. Gran knew all the roads. Little Guy was surprised. Gran gets lost easily. According to Grandaddy, Gran has no sense of direction. But she could find those yard sales. Little Guy was impressed and couldn't wait to tell Grandaddy all about it.

Mama bought two nightstands at one house. They were solid wood and really, really heavy. Little Guy helped Mama load them in the back of the van. Each nightstand had three drawers. Mama said they would make wonderful small chests for someone.

The people at the house next door were also having a yard sale but Mama isn't interested in clothes. Gran did buy one fleece jacket with a houndstooth pattern. She planned to cut it up and make scarves for her snowmen. Gran didn't tell that to the lady she bought it from. She was afraid the lady wouldn't sell it to her after all.

Next Mama took a detour, just following signs. That sale netted a sofa table. Mama was so excited. She deemed it a "find." Mama let Gran do the negotiating. Gran always gets a better price than Mama. Two men loaded it in the van. Mama had to rearrange the nightstands and roll up one of the van's seats. Little Guy's car seat was still safely secured to the other seat but he felt very crowded in.

Lots of customers were already at the next house on their list. It had a small rocker than was just Little Guy's size. Gran negotiated the price. Mama paid for it. Little Guy toted it to the van.

They were ready to go when Mama noticed smoke pouring from under the van's hood. That was not a good sign. Gran opened the hood and Mama peered inside. Pecans and other things were perched on the engine. Some critter had put them there. Gran spied a piece of her hydrangea lying amongst all the nuts. She was most upset.

The threesome decided it was probably time to head to the house. The van was full of treasures and Little Guy was badly in need of a nap!

A Good Day Turns Bad

Little Guy thought he was having a pretty good day. He and Sunshine spent the morning helping Grandaddy spray the fence rows for weeds. They'd even counted the cows. Gran had fixed spaghetti for lunch. Little Guy really likes spaghetti. After lunch, he'd stretched out on the cool tile floor for his afternoon nap. Then Mama had an idea. It was not a good idea. Mama decided that Little Guy and Sunshine needed baths. And it wasn't even Saturday! Little Guy didn't realize what Mama had planned until it was too late. Sunshine had her bath first. Since Little Guy was inside having a nap, he didn't know anything about it. He should have suspected something when Mama opened the back door, called his name and insisted he come outside. Sunshine met him at the door to tell him what was about to happen. Little Guy scurried toward the shop but Mama caught him. She picked him up and carried him to the wash area. Little Guy started shaking before Mama even turned the ...

art for a cause

This cabinet was my contribution to the Funky Furniture Auction held at Landmark Park recently. The event was to raise money for a scholarship fun. The original cabinet was stained a dark brown. It came with hearts cut into the doors and chicken wire behind them. It didn't have a back. I was told it had been chicken wire. It was definitely country -- which I'm not. I took the old doors off and put new doors on. It cut some har, a couple of eyes, put on nose knobs and some bright lips and Miz Bea was almost ready. I added her shoes and hat and she was set. This piece of functional art is whimsical and unique. And it was all for a good cause.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. – Revelation 21:4 He was smart and stubborn. He was my protector and rarely left my side. He loved licking bowls and eating treats of any kind. He was bribable in the best way. He loved walks in the pasture and aggravating his sister. His body failed him in the end. His hind legs were barely functioning. His back pain sometimes caused him to cry out. His eyesight was almost gone. But he was still so happy. I helped him stand when his body refused to lift his backside up. He rested against me until he could gain his balance. I covered him with my body when he started to slip down the stairs. We made countless trips to the veterinarian but there was no magic pill. He was only 14. He was about a year old when he came home from the kill shelter. He’d come into the shelter as a stray. Thirteen and a half years wasn’t nearly long en...
