Little Guy got up extra early. Grandaddy was headed to the garden and he wanted to go too. Sunshine yawned and stretched but she finally decided to tag along.
They were going to pick peas. Grandaddy said the black-eyed peas were ready to come off the vine. It was best to start early because it has been really hot. Little Guy and Sunshine have barely been able to play outside. They stay inside most days.
Grandaddy sat a bucket down and showed Little Guy and Sunshine how to tell which peas were ready. They all started working. The bucket filled up really fast. They trooped to the house and poured the peas on a paper and spread them out. Grandaddy explained that he didn't want them to go through a heat before they got shelled. They all got water and then headed back outside. They did it again and again and again.
Mama finally got up. She started shelling. Sunshine got permission to stay inside and shell. Little Guy was determined to help Grandaddy but Grandaddy just wouldn't stop picking. Little Guy finally gave up. He just had to go inside and cool.
After Little Guy rested, Mama handed him a pan. He started shelling. Gran fixed lunch so they got to take a break and eat. Then they started shelling again. It was almost 4 o'clock they finished. Little Guy was relieved. His fingers hurt!
Then Gran said something about putting the peas up. Little Guy couldn't believe his ears! There was more work to do. Gran washed the peas. Then she put them on the stove until they boiled. She took them off the stove. Then Mama, Little Guy and Sunshine added ice to cool the peas down. Then they put the peas in pint and quart freezer bags. After the bags were dated and labeled, they took the bags of peas and put them in the freezer. They were finally done.
Mama put supper on the table while Gran washed pans. Little Guy and Sunshine dried the pans. Then they ate supper. Mama washed the dishes so Little Guy and Sunshine could go outside and play. Little Guy was too tired to play but Sunshine said they needed to check the yard out. You never know when some critter is going to just show up. So they sniffed around but didn't find anything. It was almost dark when they came inside.
Little Guy was really tired. His little eyes kept drifting shut as Mama dried him off after his bath. She lifted him in her arms and carried him to his bed. She laid him gently down. He was asleep before she kissed him good night. Gardening was really hard work.
