Little Guy walked up to the shop and sniffed. The doors were closed but something just wasn't right. He thought maybe that was smoke coming from under the door.
He went running to the house. Everyone was inside eating supper. Gran called him but he wouldn't go inside. Mama came out and Little Guy went into the kitchen. He didn't like it though. He slicked his ears back and paced.
Finally, Gran went out to feed the geese. Little Guy went running to the shop. It didn't smell good at all but Gran wouldn't listen. He heard Mama come out side. He went running up to her. She was heading to the shop!
Little Guy stood beside her as she opened the door. Smoke poured out and the smell was so bad Little Guy had to cover his nose! Mama stepped inside, looked around, then turned around and ran toward the house. Little Guy was amazed. He didn't know Mama could run that fast. He took off after her.
Mama rushed inside the house. Grandaddy was laying back in his recliner. The Wheel of Fortune was just coming on the TV.
"You need to come out to the shop now," Mama exclaimed.
Grandaddy looked at her like she'd lost her mind. He glanced at the TV, trying to decide what to do. Grandaddy really likes watching the game show.
"The shop is full of smoke," she told him. "Something's on fire." Mama didn't wait for a response. She turned and ran back toward the shop.
Grandaddy was out of that recliner in record time. Little Guy almost got ran over as Grandaddy headed to the back door.
Mama was already opening the big roll up doors when he got there. She made Little Guy and Sunshine stay back so they wouldn't get hurt. Mama did yell for Gran to come. Little Guy figured Mama wasn't worried about Gran getting hurt. Gran is a big girl.
Grandaddy found the problem. A wire on the little tractor shorted out and caught the battery on fire. It was a big, smoking mess. Mama said it could have been worse. The whole shop could have burnt up.
Mama moved the Buggy and Grandaddy moved the two lawnmowers. Gran moved the truck. Mama towed the little burned up tractor outside. Grandaddy cleaned it up and made a list of all he'll have to replace to get it working again. Little Guy felt sorry for it. That little tractor just looked pititful!
Gran went inside. Mama stayed with Grandaddy until he'd finished. Then she put everything back in the shop. Mama bent down and gave Little Guy a hug.
"You knew something was wrong, didn't you Little Guy," she said. "You were looking out for us. I'm sorry no one paid attention."
Little Guy nodded but he didn't say anything. It could have been a whole lot worse.
