One day a small white puppy set off to explore the world. He chased a squirrel. He watched a mama bird feed her babies. He smelled a few flowers. He sniffed the bushes and walked and walked.
The sky started to grow dim as night fell. The little puppy tried to find his way home but he was really and truly lost. He spied a house that looked familiar. The little puppy headed to the back door and scratched and scratched. Finally, an older man opened the door. The little puppy rushed inside before the man could shoo him away. He didn’t want to go back outside in the dark.
The little puppy looked up and came face to face with one of the kindest smiles he’d ever seen.
“Well, what have we here,” the woman said. “It’s a puppy!”
She bent down and took his little face in her hands.
“What’s your name,” she asked.
Tears welled up in the puppy’s eyes. The kind lady patted his head and he burst into tears.
“I don’t know my name,” the puppy said. “And I can’t find my house.”
The man, who’d stood by without saying a word, stepped forward. “Don’t you worry,” he said gruffly. “You’ll stay here tonight and tomorrow I’ll help you find your home.”
The kind woman fed the puppy a good supper and gave him plenty of water to drink. Then she fixed him a bed and tucked him in for the night.
The next day the man and the puppy searched and searched but no one seemed to be missing one small white puppy. And no house looked familiar to the puppy.
The man put up signs but several days went by with no response. The puppy overheard the man and woman walking one night after he went to bed. They said something about a shelter and cages and possible adoption. The little puppy got scared. He got up from his bed and went to lay his head against the lady’s lap.
She scratched behind his ears and sadly shook her head. They were too old, she explained, and gone from home way to much to care for a puppy. But she promised they would do all they could to find the puppy a home. The shelter would only be a last resort.
The next day the woman got on the phone. She made call after call. The puppy knew she was trying to find him a home but no one seemed to want him. It hurt his feelings.
Finally, she lady hung up the phone and smiled at him. “I may have a surprise for you,” she said.
The puppy’s eyes widened in anticipation but she refused to say anything more.
A little while later an older woman stopped by the house. The puppy stood behind the kind woman and waited. The other woman looked down and smiled. That reassured the puppy.
“My daughter has been thinking about adopting,” she told the puppy. “I think she might like you.”
Hope sprung up in the puppy. He kissed the couple goodbye and climbed into the woman’s car. They drove and drove until finally they turned down a long driveway.
The woman pulled up outside a house and invited the puppy inside. She gave him a cookie and something to drink. Then he tried to take a nap while he waited.
Later in the afternoon, he heard the door open. He watched as a woman with really big blond hair stepped inside. A smile spread across her face as she looked at the puppy.
The puppy smiled tentatively. Waiting. The woman bent down and held her arms open. The puppy rushed toward her as hope filled his heart. The woman gathered him close.
“I’m your new Mama, Little Guy,” she told the puppy. “I’ve been searching for you for a long time.”
The puppy smiled broadly and wagged his curly, little tale. He was so happy to finally have a mama, a name and a forever home.
