Little Bit and the Lady

Little Bit was having a really good day. He'd walked around quite a bit, especially for a tiny little calf who was only three days old.

There were lots of other calves, some weren't much older than Little Bit. But he was the youngest. His Mama was very proud of him.

Little Bit liked being in the big pasture. He especially liked the cool spot he found under the trees. The rest of the herd moved to a different pasture. Not Little Bit. He was enjoying his nap and he refused to get up when his Mama called him.

Mama stayed with Little Bit for awhile, then she joined the herd. Little Bit wasn't afraid. It was quiet and peaceful where he was. Every now and then Mama would come back to check on Little Bit but he still wouldn't get up.

Then the lady came out to see about him. He'd seen her before. She had a nice voice and she seemed to like little calves.

She told Little Bit to get up and he did. Little Bit wasn't exactly scared of the lady. She spoke nice words and rubbed his head. But Little Bit didn't think she would let him stay in his spot either.

They started around the pasture. Little Bit tried to turn around but the lady wouldn't let him. Then Little Bit saw the dogs. He knew they were on the other side of the fence and couldn't hurt him. His Mama had told him so. But they were so scary. Little Bit got away from the lady and headed back to his spot.

The lady didn't follow him. Little Bit heard her call the dogs and then he didn't hear them any more. A short time later, Little Bit's Mama came around to check on him. The lady followed. Uh-oh.

Little Bit was a hungry and he got up to eat. Mama was so patient. The lady wanted Mama to take Little Bit around to the other cows. Little Bit didn't want to go and Mama didn't make him. The lady wasn't real happy about it but Mama wouldn't stand for anybody forcing Little Bit to do what he didn't want to do.

The lady left again. In a few minutes Little Bit heard her calling his Mama. But she didn't come to the pasture. She shook a bucket with something in it. Something his Mama wanted. Little Bit's Mama left him in his favorite spot and went to get whatever was in the bucket.

Before too long, the lady was back. Again. Didn't she ever give up? Little Bit saw the determination on her face. He got up. She walked behind him and directed him forward. He tried to go a different way. She wouldn't let him. He tried to out maneuver her. It didn't work.

Little Bit tensed up as they got near the backyard but there was no sign of the dogs. That made him feel better. He could hear his Mama calling him. Little Bit trotted a little faster. The lady kept up with him.

Pretty soon Little Bit saw his Mama. He was really glad. But there was a gate there and he couldn't get to her. Oh, no! Mama wasn't happy and neither was he. But wait. The lady came up behind Little Bit and gently moved him aside. She opened the gate. Little Bit and his Mama were reunited!

This time Little Bit didn't hesitate when Mama said they needed to go to where the other cows were.

A Good Day Turns Bad

Little Guy thought he was having a pretty good day. He and Sunshine spent the morning helping Grandaddy spray the fence rows for weeds. They'd even counted the cows. Gran had fixed spaghetti for lunch. Little Guy really likes spaghetti. After lunch, he'd stretched out on the cool tile floor for his afternoon nap. Then Mama had an idea. It was not a good idea. Mama decided that Little Guy and Sunshine needed baths. And it wasn't even Saturday! Little Guy didn't realize what Mama had planned until it was too late. Sunshine had her bath first. Since Little Guy was inside having a nap, he didn't know anything about it. He should have suspected something when Mama opened the back door, called his name and insisted he come outside. Sunshine met him at the door to tell him what was about to happen. Little Guy scurried toward the shop but Mama caught him. She picked him up and carried him to the wash area. Little Guy started shaking before Mama even turned the ...

art for a cause

This cabinet was my contribution to the Funky Furniture Auction held at Landmark Park recently. The event was to raise money for a scholarship fun. The original cabinet was stained a dark brown. It came with hearts cut into the doors and chicken wire behind them. It didn't have a back. I was told it had been chicken wire. It was definitely country -- which I'm not. I took the old doors off and put new doors on. It cut some har, a couple of eyes, put on nose knobs and some bright lips and Miz Bea was almost ready. I added her shoes and hat and she was set. This piece of functional art is whimsical and unique. And it was all for a good cause.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. – Revelation 21:4 He was smart and stubborn. He was my protector and rarely left my side. He loved licking bowls and eating treats of any kind. He was bribable in the best way. He loved walks in the pasture and aggravating his sister. His body failed him in the end. His hind legs were barely functioning. His back pain sometimes caused him to cry out. His eyesight was almost gone. But he was still so happy. I helped him stand when his body refused to lift his backside up. He rested against me until he could gain his balance. I covered him with my body when he started to slip down the stairs. We made countless trips to the veterinarian but there was no magic pill. He was only 14. He was about a year old when he came home from the kill shelter. He’d come into the shelter as a stray. Thirteen and a half years wasn’t nearly long en...
