Little Guy Says No To Prissy Dogdom

Little Guy climbed into the recliner beside Gran to watch the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Gran loves to watch the dog show but Little Guy has never seen one before. Wow! Little Guy's eyes widened as he saw the arena and lots of people in the audience. Some lady in a long dress walked around. All the dogs looked different. They looked downright prissy. "Gran, that dog has a bow in her hair," Little Guy said. "I know, Little Guy," Gran said. "She wants to look her very best for the show." "So maybe she can win the competition," he asked. "Well, that's certainly what she wants," Gran said. "What does she get if she wins," he asked. "Lots of attention," Gran replied. "This is the most important dog show in the world. It is the best of the best." "Oh, that would be so exciting. My Mama thinks I'm the best," Little Guy said. He thought a minute. ...

Little Guy Almost Makes A Friend

Monday, February 8, 2010 Little Guy spotted a new friend ambling across the pasture. Or, at least, he thought it might be a new friend. He hesitated. It also might be a varmint but he wasn't sure. Little Guy glanced around but he didn't see Sunshine. She was really good at weeding out who was a friend and who was a varmint. Little Guy decided that he was a big boy and he could check it out on his own. He started across the pasture. He placed a big smile on his face. It was easier to make friends when you smiled. He got close enough he could see the animal's smooth black coat. Wow! That white stripe sure was pretty. Just when Little Guy was about to introduce himself, Grandaddy bellowed out his name. Sometimes Little Guy can tell Grandaddy doesn't need him right that moment. This was not one of those times. He looked longingly at the animal. "Little Guy," Grandaddy yelled again. "Get away from that skunk!" Grandaddy sounded pretty excited so Little Gu...

Little Guy Wants To Surf

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 Little Guy Wants To Surf "Mama! Mama! I want to learn how to surf." Little Guy skidded to a halt in front of his Mama. "Where did that come from, Little Guy," Mama asked. "You've never even seen anyone surf." "USA Today had a story on dogs in California that surf. And the dogs really like it. And they're good. I could be good too, Mama. I know I could. Please!" "Little Guy where would you learn to surf at," she asked. "We've got a pond," he said. Little Guy had obviously thought this through. "There are no waves on the pond, Little Guy. You've got to have waves if you're going to surf," Mama said. Little Guy thought about that. "I know! I'll get Granddaddy to make some waves. How hard can it be?" Little Guy smiled confidently. His Granddaddy could do anything. Mama shook her head. "I don't know, Little Guy. Waves would be pretty difficult to make on...

Little Guy Gets Left in the Shop Little Guy was not having a good morning. Granddaddy wouldn't let Little Guy and Sunshine out of the backyard. Sugar had a new calf. Blackie was grieving. And Granddaddy didn't think Little Guy or Sunshine should help. Little Guy disagreed but there was nothing he could do about it. Granddaddy had set up that awful electric fence around the backyard so digging out was not going to happen. Finally, Granddaddy relented. He had charged the car battery and then had to take the charger back to the shop. Oh boy! Little Guy and Sunshine got to go. It wasn't much of a trip but it sure beat the backyard. Sunshine stayed outside the shop door but Little Guy rushed inside and started sniffing around. Surely there was something he could hunt. It was a shop after all. Mama had it filled with stuff that Granddaddy calls junk. Mama calls it future money. Little stays out of that debate. Little Guy was moving around some boxes when all of a sudden the light...

Little Guy Loses a Friend Little Guy ran as fast as he could back to the house. He shoved open the back door. His nails clicked on the tile floor as he hurried to the family room. Gran was sitting in her recliner. Little Guy launched himself into her lap and hid his face against her shoulder. "It's not fair," he cried. "Why did Little Blackie have to die? He wasn't sick at all. I liked Little Blackie!" Gran patted Little Guy's back and tried to comfort him. He sobbed and sobbed. He heard Mama coming into the house. She leaned over and lifted Little Guy into her arms and held him close. "I know it hurts Little Guy," she said softly. "None of us expected Little Blackie to die. We don't know why it happened." "I want Granddaddy to fix it," Little Guy said. "I want Little Blackie back!" "We all would, but only God can bring someone back to life. This is something Granddaddy can't fix." Mama s...

Let's Celebrate! Little Guy and Sunshine celebrated a birthday today. Except it wasn't Little Guy's birthday. And it wasn't Sunshine's birthday. It was Tim's birthday. Or at least it will be tomorrow. He turns 30! Uh-oh. Gran made him candy. He likes candy. Little Guy likes candy too but he didn't get to eat any. Mama bought him a book. It was filled with devotions about God. Tim loves God. Little Guy loves God too! Granddaddy took everyone out to eat. It was really, really good. Little Guy, Sunshine and Mama got to play with Andrew. He's three. Andrew is a really good quarterback, He even runs the football in and scores touchdowns. Little Guy and Sunshine ran with him. Mama cheered for everyone. Granddaddy played football too. Andrew threw it right to him and he caught it -- most of the time anyway. Little Guy loves to play football, even when Sunshine tackles him hard. Andrew read Mama a book. And they played with remote-control trucks! Little Guy cha...

Cows Are Really Noisy Little Guy put his paws over his ears. It didn't work. The cows just bellowed and bellowed. He wanted them to just shut up already! Little Guy had a headache. He was going to go tell his Mama on those noisy cows. Mama already knew. She had a headache too. "I know how you feel, Little Guy," Mama said. "Blackie woke me up at 7 a.m. calling for breakfast to be delivered to the back fence area." "But Mama why won't they just give up," he asked. "Granddaddy has spoiled them rotten. They think I'll give in. Of course, I did feed Buddy. He never said a word. He just stood at the gate and watched me paint the rocker. He has really good manners. The cows could learn a thing or two from him." "Buddy is really nice," Little Guy agreed. Buddy is the bull. He weghs more than 2,000 pounds. Little Guy weighs 38 pounds. Little Guy is really glad Buddy is nice. "Are you going to feed them so that they'll be qu...
